What Totallytics adds

Nothing to run. Matomo On-Premise is free software, but it needs a PHP host, a MySQL or MariaDB database, updates and backups, and its funnels, heatmaps, search keywords and cohorts are paid plugins on top: the Team bundle starts at 230 EUR a month and Business at 1,209 EUR, billed annually. Totallytics is hosted, free, and every feature comes with the account.

API analytics. One middleware for Hono, Express, Fastify, Next.js, Cloudflare Workers and Go reports requests, status codes, p50, p95 and p99 latency and errors per route, with email alerts on error rate, p95 and silence. Matomo has no API latency monitoring. More on API analytics.

Cookie-free by design. There is no setting to get wrong: the 4 KB script sets no cookies and uses no local storage, visitors are counted with a daily hash, IP addresses are never stored, and the retention cohorts work from the browser's own HTTP cache.

Where Matomo is the better choice

  • You want open source or self-hosting. Totallytics is closed source and hosted only.
  • You need heatmaps, session recordings, A/B tests, a tag manager, form analytics or a Google Analytics import.
  • You need user IDs, visitor profiles or ecommerce tracking.
  • You have more than 50 websites, or need team members and roles; Matomo Cloud's Business plan includes 30 team members.
  • You want a mature product. Totallytics is in beta.

Switch from Matomo

Add your site in Totallytics, then replace the Matomo tracking code with the script from your site settings:

<script
  async
  src="https://totallytics.com/latest.js"
  data-hostname="example.com"
  data-verify="YOUR_SITE_VERIFY_TOKEN"
></script>

Replace _paq.push(['trackEvent', 'Signup', 'click']) calls with window.tt_event("signup"), and recreate goals in the site settings; a goal added in Totallytics is computed from the data already collected, so it covers past traffic. Matomo history cannot be imported, so keep an export of your Matomo reports as an archive.
